Graduate degrees in divinity provide students with the skill-set and knowledge to serve as leaders in faith communities. The program helps the student to foster his or her own ability to interpret sacred texts, develop spiritual discernment, and grow in pastoral sensitivity.
Our Students

There are many spiritual, religious, and faith groups.   Many of these groups have their own path to assist people in developing their skills of pastoral care.  Many of them have their own path to ministry and their own path towards obtaining their own Master of Divinity within their own faith schools.  However, there are many that do not.  SCA UTS is not meant to replace your current spiritual, religious, or faith group path.  It is rather meant for those people who need an M.Div. in order to reach their career goals in chaplaincy, spiritual direction, coaching, ministry, and many others.  If you are wanting to receive a Master of Divinity degree from an interfaith, interreligious, non-traditional, pathway in order to continue your spiritual work, then this path is for you.

Pastoral Ministry

SCA UTS sees the Master of Divinity program as one which assists the student in developing basic skills in worship and ritual around the area of ministry.  This may include weddings, funerals, communion, and baptism.  Often the people that need extensive study in these areas are ones who become a Wedding Officiant, End-of-Life Celebrant, or Life Transition Worker.

Path to Professional Chaplain

It has been our desire to become a place where Spiritual Care leaders can come together and find the tools and resources they need in order to become board certified chaplains and spiritual care providers.  It has, through its Spiritual Care Think-Tank, become just that.  Our think-tank is the largest in the world of knowledgeable masters in the field of spiritual care.  It is a place where chaplains, nurses, clergy, social workers, spiritual coaches, spiritual care providers, pastors, priests, psychotherapists, CPE supervisors, spiritual directors, and many more come together in a synergistic way in order to share knowledge and advance spiritual care in the industry.  The Master of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity programs are designed to assist us in this process.

For an individual to become a professional chaplain often the requirements include:

  1. 2 to 4 units of CPE.  SCA UTS has relationships with the Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT) and the Spiritual Living Center for Education and Training (SLCET) in order to assist students in receiving quality Clinical Pastoral Education.

  2. 2,000 hours of Supervised Clinical Training.  That is accomplished in four units of CPE.

  3. Board Certification.  There are many groups that certify chaplains, such as the Spiritual Care Association.

  4. Sometimes, endorsement and/or ordination by a faith group may be required.  SCA UTS has relationships and suggestions for the student that needs assistance in this area.  Many of these relationships are ones who are recognized already by the US Armed Forces, and the VA.

  5. A Master Degree, sometimes specifically in the area of Divinity or equivalent.

Why Chaplains

There are more and more people that are going into the field of Chaplaincy who have not had traditional religious and denominational experiences.  Often they find themselves falling short in the area of ritual when it comes to their work as a chaplain.  Chaplains may be asked to do things that seem foreign to them like weddings, funerals, prayer services, memorials, dedications, and baptisms.  The Masters of Divinity in Pastoral Ministry assists these students in just that, rituals.

What Makes Us Different

There are least four reasons why you should pick the Spiritual Care Association University of Theology and Spirituality.

  1. Spiritual Care:  We are one of the few educational centers that focus on Spiritual Care, Spirituality, and Theology in a rich environment of Interfaith education.  Our goal is not to make people carbon copies of ourselves, but to improve upon what they bring to the educational table.

  2. Interfaith Pastoral Ministry:  Most of the programs available today are one-dimensional.  Our program is multi-directional by nature.

  3. The Silos:  It has been our experience that many of today’s pastoral ministers come from Silo Traditions.  Our programs broaden this scope of knowledge and understanding.

  4. Think-Tank:  SCA UTS works in collaboration with HealthCare Chaplaincy Network (HCCN) and the Spiritual Care Association (SCA).  HealthCare Chaplaincy Network, founded in 1961, is a global health care nonprofit organization that offers spiritual care-related information and resources, and professional chaplaincy services in hospitals, other health care settings, and online.  HCCN and SCA provide a  plethora of education, experience, and expertise, bringing together one of the largest international think tanks in spiritual care which has developed and produced chaplaincy quality indicators, a scope of practice, numerous white papers, and other resources for both education and practice.

The Pastoral Ministry programs of SCA UTS are focused on interfaith, interdenominational, interspiritual, intercommunity, interreligious, and dialogical approaches to faith leadership. It will help to provide a pathway for personal and interspiritual growth.
